Oral appliance therapy is an effective treatment option for snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).   An oral sleep appliance can improve your sleep, restore your alertness and revitalize your health.

As a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (one of only 22 in the greater NY area), Dr. Chicvak has the necessary training to determine if a custom-fit oral sleep appliance is right for you.

ABOUT ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY

Worn only during sleep, an oral appliance fits like a sports mouth guard or an orthodontic retainer which is why people refer to it as a sleep mouth guard. It supports the jaw in a forward position to help maintain an open upper airway. Research shows that oral appliance therapy is a very effective treatment option for snoring and mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea and can also be effective for those diagnosed with severe OSA.

ADVANTAGES OF ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY

While a CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) machine is the preferred method of treatment for severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea, many people cannot tolerate sleeping with the machine or refuse to use it regularly.  Oral appliance therapy is an effective, non-invasive treatment that fits easily into your lifestyle. HOW WE CAN HELP

The First Step
We work with your physicians to treat snoring and sleep apnea. The first step is to see if you're at risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. We will perform a sleep evaluation which may indicate the need for a formal sleep study to determine your level of Sleep Apnea.

We will then conduct a complete clinical evaluation including an examination of your teeth, jaw, tongue and airway to determine if you are a candidate for Oral Appliance Therapy.

Making and Fitting Your Oral Appliance
Oral appliances are custom made for your mouth using impressions and models of your teeth. These models are sent to our dental lab where the appliance is made.

Once your oral appliance is ready, we will test the fit in our office and perform any adjustments to the appliance that are necessary to maximize its comfort and effectiveness for you.  You also will learn how to clean and maintain the oral appliance.

Follow-Up Visits
Follow-up visits with our office will be necessary to ensure optimal fit, comfort and proper positioning of the oral appliance; effective oral appliances are always custom fit and adjusted over time to ensure maximum success. These routine visits are an important part of your long-term treatment success. Once you and Dr. Chicvak determine subjective relief, you will be scheduled for another sleep evaluation to determine an objective measurement of effectiveness of your treatment.

COSTS

People are surprised to learn that most medical (not dental) insurance plans will help cover the cost of the custom oral appliance as treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea including MEDICARE  While we never let insurance dictate our treatment plans, we will work with you to maximize any medical insurance benefits you may have.

My 33-year-old son is disabled and has been treated by Dr. Chicvak for two months for sleep apnea. In the short 3-week space of time since he began wearing his oral appliance, he has already felt several large effects. No snoring. No need for daytime naps or very late waking up. More energy for daytime tasks. He is very obese and is working with a nutritionist to lose weight. We hope this treatment will also give him support in that regard. This we will come to know later, but it is all is very motivating to him.

In the intake process, RoseMarie was superb, keeping us on track and preparing us for the next steps – paperwork, home sleep test, and dental exam. When the test results were in, she interpreted the various data results in detail with us. He had severe sleep apnea, losing oxygen and technically waking an average of about once every minute.
Dr. Chicvak was very clear and supportive in explaining to him what the oral appliance would do and what the gradual process of jaw muscle adjustment to it meant. It gave him confidence, and he has cooperated with the staff admirably throughout.
I highly recommend this wonderful service for controlling the substantial ill effects of sleep apnea that Dr. Chicvak and his well-trained, friendly staff provide to their patients. -Herb
